Process

How we find your birth certificate.

A structured process informed by more than two decades of legal practice and document work in Portugal.

  1. Initial information review. You provide the name, approximate dates and any known location details; we then assess whether a registry or archive search is feasible.
  2. We search the archives. Our team searches civil registries, parish books, and digitized archives across the relevant districts of Portugal. Archive search timing varies.
  3. Certificate issued (1-2 weeks). Once located, we request the official certified birth certificate from the competent registry office.
  4. Delivery & apostille (1 week). We deliver the certificate to you. If needed, we arrange apostille certification for international use.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

We can search Portuguese birth records dating back approximately 200 years, covering both civil registry records (from 1911 onwards) and parish records (baptism records prior to 1911). Our team has access to archives across all districts of Portugal.
The more information you provide, the faster and more accurate the search. Ideally: the person's full name, approximate date of birth, and place of birth (city, town, or parish). If you have limited information, we can still conduct a broader search across multiple registries.
Yes. We regularly obtain birth certificates for deceased individuals, which is essential for citizenship by descent applications, inheritance proceedings, and genealogical research.
Much of the preparation and, depending on the parties' circumstances and the available procedure, parts of the formal process may be handled remotely or through legal representatives. Specific attendance or authentication requirements must be confirmed for each case. Certified copies or apostilled originals can be sent to you abroad.
For records in the digital civil registry system (post-1911), certificates can typically be obtained within 1-2 weeks. For older records requiring parish archive searches, the process may take 2-6 weeks depending on the archive's location and record condition.
Civil registration became generally compulsory in Portugal in 1911. Births before that date were generally recorded as baptisms in Catholic parish books, which are now held in district and national archives. We search parish and archival records for earlier births and the civil registries (Conservatórias do Registo Civil) for later ones. Certified civil-registry records and certified archival or parish records may both be used for legal purposes, subject to the form, certification and requirements of the receiving authority.
Yes. In addition to birth certificates, we can search for and obtain marriage certificates, death certificates, and other civil registry documents from Portuguese archives.
If after an exhaustive search we cannot locate the record, we inform you of all the searches conducted and the archives consulted. We provide a detailed report that can be useful for alternative approaches or further genealogical research.
