Through Marriage

If you're married to a Portuguese citizen for 3+ years, you can apply for citizenship.

Requirements: Acquisition through marriage or a judicially recognised de facto union of more than three years with a Portuguese national is made by declaration and must not fall within the criminal, security and restrictive-measures grounds of article 6(1)(f) to (h). Where the marriage or union has lasted more than three but no more than six years, and the couple does not have common children of Portuguese nationality, evidence of effective ties to Portugal — including language and cultural integration — may remain relevant in opposition proceedings, which the Public Prosecutor may bring within two years of registration. Where the relationship has lasted more than six years, or the couple has common children of Portuguese nationality, opposition is limited to the applicable criminal, security and restrictive-measures grounds.

🇺🇸 Will I lose my US citizenship?

No. The United States allows dual citizenship. Becoming Portuguese does not affect your US passport or citizenship status. You will have two passports and can travel on either.

💰 What about US taxes?

Citizenship alone doesn't create tax obligations. As a US citizen, you already file taxes on worldwide income regardless of additional citizenships. Portuguese citizenship only creates Portuguese tax obligations if you become a Portuguese tax resident (living 183+ days in Portugal). The US-Portugal tax treaty prevents double taxation.

📍 Do I need to live in Portugal?

For a parent route, residence in Portugal is generally not required. A grandparent route has separate material requirements. Naturalisation by legal residence requires seven or ten years under the 2026 law. Any need for personal attendance must be checked for the procedure concerned.

🔐 Security clearances and government jobs?

Yes. Both the United States and Portugal allow dual citizenship. You can become Portuguese while keeping your US passport. Neither country requires you to renounce the other.
The three main paths are: (1) Ancestry — if a parent or grandparent was Portuguese, (2) Marriage — if married to a Portuguese citizen for 3+ years, (3) Naturalisation — once the legal residence period is met: 7 or 10 years under the 2026 law.

There is no shortcut: the route depends on your facts. Descent from a Portuguese parent or grandparent is typically the most expeditious where the records are consistent, because it does not depend on residence years. Marriage requires 3+ years of marriage or partnership with a Portuguese citizen. Naturalisation by residence requires 7 or 10 years under the 2026 law.
