Citizenship · Macau
Portuguese nationality for people from Macau and their descendants.
There is no current special or simplified Macau procedure. The analysis starts with the ordinary rules of Portuguese nationality: determine the position of the person born in Macau under the law applicable at the relevant date and, where original Portuguese nationality exists, reconstruct any transmission to descendants.
Possible routes
Who may have a route.
Person born in Macau in the relevant period
The date, birth registration, filiation and law then in force must be checked; place of birth alone does not support an automatic conclusion.
Child of an original Portuguese national
May use the specific child route.
Grandchild of an original Portuguese national
May use the grandchild route, subject to the current substantive requirements.
Interrupted chain
It must be determined whether nationality can first be recognised for the intermediate relative.
Historical context
Macau's Portuguese heritage.
Portugal extended its nationality laws to Macau throughout its administration. Understanding the key dates is essential to determining your eligibility for Portuguese citizenship.
Portuguese territory until 1999
Macau was administered by Portugal from 1557 until December 20, 1999, when sovereignty was transferred to China.
1981 nationality law change
The Portuguese Nationality Act took effect in Macau on November 21, 1981, changing the regime from jus soli to jus sanguinis.
Case-by-case verification
Each person’s position depends on the date, birth registration, filiation and the law then applicable. The first stage is documentary: build the chain and identify the law applicable to each generation.
Eligibility
Who qualifies for Portuguese citizenship?
- iBorn in Macau before 21 November 1981 — the date, birth registration, filiation and law then in force must be checked; birth in the territory alone does not support an automatic conclusion.
- iiBorn in Macau 1981–1999 — original nationality generally depends on filiation; the parents’ position at the date of birth must be confirmed with documents.
- iiiChildren of an original Portuguese national — may use the specific child route, through registration or declaration, regardless of where they were born.
- ivGrandchildren of an original Portuguese national — may use the grandchild route, subject to the current substantive requirements; where the intermediate relative has not been recognised, it must be determined whether nationality can first be recognised for that relative.
